Challenge

The assignment was to create an interactive digital narrative in the theme "diversion and inclusion". We decided to explore the topic of adopted Asian children in the Netherlands, with the title "Dutch on the inside, Asian on the outside".

Responsibilities

I was responsible for the visuals. I chose to work on the visuals because it does not fall within the learning goals of the Master's programme, but it is a hard skill I wanted to improve alongside my studies as well. In terms of the structure and story, we collaborated using the tool Miro.

process

Since the interactive digital narrative had to depict a certain verisimilitude, we started with interviewing three people we knew who were adopted from Asia. We wanted to know the struggles they went through whilst growing up. This already gave us the main structure. Within this idea of growing up, choices could be made based on these interviews. For instance, the interactor would be able to choose whether they wanted to change their name at a certain time in their life.

For the visuals, I adjusted free illustrations from Vecteezy (ndahroh), and put them in a polaroid mockup.

With some help, I made a few animations as well.

Key takeaways

The collaboration on this project was enjoyable. We all worked hard, stimulating each other even more. The hardest part was getting the story structure right, which was even more challenging to do remotely. If we would have had more time, I recommend we spent it on the narrative itself. Only a solid foundation allows the elements that follow to flourish.
